In 2010, bands in the Peace Country Region had a population of 7,711 Registered Indians, 59.1% of whom lived on reserve and crown land.i  This represents an 11.8% increase in registered population over five years.  Registered Indians comprised 5.9% of Peace Country’s total population in 2010, compared with 2.9% for the province as a whole.  Registered Indians in Peace Country are younger than the average Albertan; 28% are under the age of 15 (versus 18% of the provincial population).


i Registered (Status) or Treaty Indians: According to Statistics Canada Registered Indians (also referred to as “status Indians”) refer to those persons registered under the Indian Act while Treaty Indian refer to people who are registered under the Indian Act and who belong to an Indian Band or First Nation that signed a treaty with the Crown. Registered/Treaty Indians may be classified as on or off reserve indicating their place of residence.
