The province of Alberta is known for its natural beauty, but it’s the people of our province that have made it successful. A multinational mix of approximately 4.3 million as of January 1, 2016 has forged the many economic advantages and high quality of life that Albertans enjoy today.
Our society is guided by shared values and linked by a deep respect and appreciation for multiculturalism and the value of hard work. English is our most common language, but with Alberta's cultural diversity, dozens of languages are spoken. The same can be said for religions – many are practiced and all are respected. From our major urban centres to our smallest towns, Albertans are generally described as being strongly independent and entrepreneurial.
Spirit of Alberta: Alberta’s cultural policy
The Government of Alberta is also proud of our province's unique and vibrant culture, and wants to see it continue to grow and flourish. To achieve this, a cultural policy entitled The Spirit of Alberta has been developed. The Spirit of Alberta supports the growth and development of an environment where cultural expressions and distinctiveness are celebrated.
