Four Strategic Directions

Alberta's economy is strong. Why do we need to change?

Globally, competitive economies are growing and evolving and Alberta must continue to develop along with them. The best time to refocus the economy is now, while Alberta is strong and we have the opportunity to be proactive. Combining our strong resource-based economy with an innovative, knowledge-based, value-added economy is what will keep Alberta at the forefront.

The transition from our current economic situation into this progressive and adaptable knowledge-based economy will not happen overnight. There is no better time than now to begin the work that is necessary. Albertans expect our current prosperity to be sustained, and a continuance of our high quality of life. The strategy Securing Tomorrow's Prosperity identifies steps or strategic directions towards achieving that vision. They are:

  1. Enhance Alberta's Current Competitive Advantages

To enhance Alberta's current competitive advantages, the strategy recognizes the importance of building on our existing knowledge-ready workforce and our competitive business climate, and to continue our investment in infrastructure.

  2. Build the Capacity of Alberta's Innovation System

Innovation is another integral component of the strategy, and a well-structured, productive innovation system and culture will allow Alberta to remain competitive as a market for high-tech development.

  3. Grow and Strengthen Alberta's Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's)

Over 90 percent of businesses in Western Canada are categorized Small and Medium Enterprises. These businesses are the backbone of our economic success, and all responsible and reasonable efforts should be made to facilitate the creation of more SME's and every resource should be available to these businesses to assist them in growing.

  4. Focus on Priority Value-Added Sectors

The strategy has identified many key industry sectors that have the potential of maximizing the benefits resulting from its successful implementation. Mature, expanding, and emerging industry sectors can all benefit from a successful transition from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based, innovative economy.
