Initiatives
The Government of Alberta, in collaboration with industry, not-for-profit, and educational organizations, has produced a number of forward-thinking initiatives. Sustaining our prosperity is the aim, and each of the initiatives has identified areas where we can improve our economy further.
Whether by increasing efficiency, implementing value-added manufacturing concepts, expanding our knowledge-based sectors, or by utilizing other strategies listed below, Albertans are recognizing the necessity of being proactive about our economic transition.

Alberta Government 2006 Budget Highlights
- $4.1 billion surplus forecast: Allocated mainly to savings, the Sustainability Fund, and capital investment
- Post-secondary education: 16 per cent increase in operating funding
- Three-year Capital Plan: Allocates $13.3 billion for infrastructure, an increase of 45 per cent

Alberta and Climate Change: Taking Action
Alberta's plan focuses on improving energy efficiency, enhancing how we use technology to control industrial emissions, seeking out new environmentally friendly sources of energy, and better managing our emissions today and in the future.

Hydrocarbon Upgrading Task Force
Initiated September 2004, this industry/government task force was formed to create a competitive hydrocarbon industry that expands the market for Alberta's bitumen and produces higher value products in Alberta.

Released in February 2005, it outlines objectives and actions for sustainable rural communities.

Alberta Employment and Immigration (EI) in consultation with employers, training providers and other key stakeholders, developed the Skills Investment Strategy to increase opportunities for Albertans to get the skills they need to succeed in the labour market.

Water for Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainability
In Alberta, our quality of life, and life itself, depends on having a healthy and sustainable water supply the environment, for our communities and for our economic well-being. The Government of Alberta is committed to the wise management of Alberta's water quantity and quality for the benefit of Albertans now and in the future.

Multi-year project, initiated September 2004, providing insight on Alberta's economic, social and policy landscape and tracking how government responds to challenges.

Alberta Chamber of Resources Oilsands Technology Roadmap
Released January 2004, this strategy identifies how Canada's oil sands industry can achieve the production of five million barrels per day by 2030 in an economical, environmental and socially responsible manner.
Educational Organizations

Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science
The centre, scheduled to open in 2010, will be one of only a few of its kind in the world to house interdisciplinary science research teams in one facility. As a result, it will attract and retain world-class teaching and researching talents - from Alberta, Canada, and across the globe.

Canadian Manufacturers' and Exporters (CME) Lean Consortia
CME facilitates consortia of up to 12 non-competing companies to become high performance manufacturers.

Central Alberta Economic Partnership Labour Force Strategy
Released March 2005, the strategy identified 12 initiatives to increase the number of skilled workers in the 42 partner communities.
