Cities, regions, towns and communities
Throughout its history, Alberta has drawn people from around the world to its rich opportunities and possibilities. Today, Alberta’s population is more than 3.5 million people. More than two thirds live in and around the cities of Calgary and Edmonton, the capital 300 kilometres north. They form the Calgary – Edmonton corridor, with Red Deer, the third largest city, situated between them.
However, just as Alberta has some of the most varied natural environments, so does it offer communities with a remarkable range of lifestyle choices and business options. Communities across the province offer business opportunities and a full range of health, education and recreation services. Some notable regional centres are:
- Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, 216 km south and 293 km southeast of Calgary.
- Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie, 439 km northeast and 456 km northwest of Edmonton.
For information about particular communities or regions, see the Community Profiles section of the Alberta First website. Visit Service Alberta for information about opportunities and services in rural Alberta.
Alberta's Regional Economic Development Alliances (REDAs) support economic development throughout the province. To access information about each REDA and its member communities, visit the links listed below.
