Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge encourages diversity and inclusion
Trust. Respect. Understanding. Acceptance. Support. In 2005, the City of Lethbridge and the Aboriginal community signed a Charter and Action Plan grounded in these values to demonstrate their commitment to improving social conditions of urban Aboriginal people and to build bridges with respect to Aboriginal culture and community.
The City asked the Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge to implement the Charter and Action Plan by providing advocacy and support services in the areas of human rights, women’s issues, transitional supports, community updates, employment supports, collaborative funding, and cultural awareness.
As a strong community leader, the Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge has significantly initiated, supported and contributed to the collaborative partnerships needed to build a better community…. a place where all people are welcomed and able to participate in community life,” said Diane Randell, manager of community and social development for the City of Lethbridge.
Some of the Council’s current initiatives include a pilot-project with the Aboriginal Opportunities Employment Centre called the Job Finders Club, with a goal to have 20 of the 24 participants employed by the end of the project. Also new in 2011 is the first Aboriginal Career Fair in Lethbridge and an increased focus on Human Rights in the Workplace for individuals experiencing racism and discrimination.
There will also be the continued use of Pole gatherings in areas of housing, employment, youth, culture, health, education, seniors/Elders, women and families, justice and human rights. These Pole gatherings address major issues and help to develop new initiatives that will address any gaps in services in the City of Lethbridge.
The Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge also delivers the Urban Aboriginal Strategy, a community-based initiative developed by the Government of Canada to improve social and economic opportunities of Aboriginal people living in urban centres.
