Natural wonders

Alberta is famous for its wide open spaces, rolling prairies, lush forests and majestic mountains. Our dramatic landscape, with 600 lakes, 245 rivers and more than 2,300 hours of annual sunshine, makes Alberta the ultimate year-round playground.

We enjoy some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in North America, including:

  • desert badlands with more dinosaur fossils than any other place on earth
  • the world's only boreal forest songbird observatories
  • the largest collection of Aboriginal rock art on the North American Plains
  • awe-inspiring glaciers and  towering mountains.

Alberta is home to 530 parks and protected areas – including 70 provincial parks, five National Parks and five UNESCO World Heritage Sites – more than any other province.

Our parklands provide a broad range of recreation opportunities, from highly developed campgrounds and beach areas to remote backcountry areas.
