Amateur sports

One of the best ways to meet people in your community and stay fit is to play sports. People of all ages can enjoy sport through joining sports associations. Children can play sports through their school and adults can form teams and play in social sport leagues.

Sports in schools

Physical education and sport is an important part of the school curriculum in Alberta. Activities are designed so that students kindergarten to Grade 12 gain appropriate movement skills, understand and experience the benefits of physical activity, learn to interact positively with others and take responsibility to lead an active life as part of their educational program.

Children and youth also participate in school sports teams that practice and have games after school or on the weekend. This can be a great way for children and youth new to Alberta to make new friends and improve their language skills.

Many schools are involved with the Alberta Schools Athletic Association, which coordinates a program of worthwhile athletic activities for Alberta school children.

Sports associations

There are more than 100 sport and recreation associations in Alberta for activities as varied as darts, volleyball and karate. Most of these associations are open to people of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to semi-professionals. There are also organizations for people with disabilities.

Alberta Games

Alberta runs a number of provincial athletic events every year to help athletes compete and improve their skills:

Many of the athletes who compete at these games will then go on to compete at the Western Canada Summer Games, the Arctic Winter Games and the Canada Winter and Summer Games, and beyond.
