Community recreation

Most communities have recreation facilities and programs that you can get involved with.  They may be run by the local council, ethnic or cultural groups or religious organizations. Community facilities and programs are an excellent place to meet people in your community, make new friends, try new activities and stay active.

These facilities and programs may offer reduced fees for children, students and seniors. Some also have reduced fees for people with low incomes.

Recreation facilities

Recreation facilities are often run by the city, town or village and may include:

  • swimming pools
  • skating and curling rinks
  • skateboard parks
  • running tracks
  • tennis courts
  • fitness centres
  • gymnasiums
  • sports arenas
  • climbing walls
  • playgrounds

How can I find my community’s recreation programs?

To find your community’s website visit this list of Alberta Communities.

Information about community facilities and recreation programs are usually listed under sections called Residents, Visiting or Living, with subheadings such as:

  • recreation and leisure
  • indoor or outdoor facilities
  • parks and recreation
  • things to do
  • recreation centres
  • sports and recreation

Recreation programs

Many communities also offer programs for different interests. These might include computer classes, cooking lessons, arts and craft classes like pottery, painting or photography, or active classes like learning salsa dance or yoga.

Communities will often publish a booklet each season that lists all the classes and activities that will be offered as well as registration information.

How can I find adult learning opportunities?

  • Find your community’s website and see what recreation activities are available.
  • Visit the community learning section of the Alberta Advanced Education and Technology website.
  • Contact your local public school board, community league, or ethnic or cultural organizations.

Active living resources

Many communities also have campaigns, events and programs that promote active living to encourage citizens to add physical activity to their daily life for good health.  An example is ActivEdmonton, aimed at making Edmonton the most physically active city in Canada.

Here are more active living resources for ideas on how to become more physically active.
