Public libraries

Public libraries in Alberta are freely available

Alberta’s public libraries provide free information and referral services. Libraries may charge a small annual fee for library membership cards that allow people to borrow books, videotapes and other library materials for a specified period of time. However, you do not need a membership cardto access materials within the library.

If you need help finding information about a program or service, ask a librarian for assistance.

Most libraries also have local newspapers for you to read and computers that you can use to search the Internet. Ask the library staff to show you how to use their computers.

Many libraries also offer resources and information for immigrants such as foreign-language newspapers, books and audio visual materials, access to English as a Second Language programs and opportunities to meet with other immigrants. Contact your local library to find out which resources and services they offer.
