Improving your English
Improving you and your family's English language skills can help you settle into Alberta more easily.
English as a Second Language (ESL) programs help children learn English more quickly and adjust to Canadian customs and social expectations. For information about ESL programs in general, see the Information for Parents section of the Alberta Education website.
You may qualify for government-funded language training through the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program or a provincially funded program such as Alberta Works.
If you are interested in taking ESL classes, contact an assessment and referral centre for current information about class locations and funding programs in Calgary and Edmonton. This service is free of charge to permanent residents, landed immigrants and Canadian citizens – fees may apply for work and study visa holders.
The service is available through Calgary Immigrant Aid Society Immigrant Language and Vocational Assessment-Referral Centre and Catholic Social Services Language Assessment, Referral and Counselling Centre. Counsellors at these referral centres may be able to provide services in your own language.
If you live outside Edmonton and Calgary, contact an immigrant-serving agency or a Citizenship and Immigration Canada office and ask for the local assessment and referral agency.
