The workplace

If you are looking for work in Alberta, it is useful for you to learn about common practices in the Alberta workplace. These includes employers' expectations and paycheque information.

To promote effective workplace practices and the fair treatment of workers, the Government of Alberta has worked with Alberta industries to develop the following:

  • Employment standards: By law, Alberta workplaces must strive to be fair to their employees. For example, employers must ensure that their employees are fairly and regularly paid for their work, and that suitable rest time is provided.
  • Employment Insurance (EI): Provided by the Government of Canada, Employment Insurance provides temporary funding for unemployed workers while they look for new work or upgrade their skills.
  • Workplace health and safety and workers’ compensation: Employers must ensure the workplace environment is not hazardous to employees. If an accident does take place at work, employees may be eligible for Workers’ Compensation benefits.
