Alberta’s energy technology and services sector has experienced extraordinary growth in recent years which is expected to continue far into the future.

Interesting facts about Alberta’s energy technology and services:

  • Alberta produced an estimated average of 1.25 million barrels per day of crude bitumen in 2006, and is targeting approximately 3.5 million barrels per day by 2020.
  • In 2006, Canada experienced a 14% increase in engineering investment. This was principally concentrated in non-conventional oil and gas extraction, where investment nearly doubled in 2006, as considerable infrastructure was added to the Alberta oil sands.
  • Industrial machinery and equipment has experienced strong growth in recent years driven in large part by the high level of activity in Alberta’s oil and gas sector, and in 2006, employment in this industry was about 42,500.
  • Total employment in energy technologies and services has steadily increased since 2003, with about a 24% increase in 2005. As of 2006, there were approximately 94,600 individuals employed in the ETS sector.
  • In 2006, ETS exports exceeded $2 billion, representing an increase of approximately 22% from 2005.
