Government Initiatives

The government of Alberta is committed to ensuring that companies in the province stay competitive. This includes developing strategies that will enable organizations to increase their productivity through supply chain expansion initiatives as well as those that promote the development of new technologies.

Technology Development and Commercialization

  • Alberta Energy

    • Energy Innovation Strategy
The strategy was designed to respond to the future energy needs of Alberta by investing in research, technology and innovation that create commercial value and achieve the highest standards of environmental performance. The Innovative Energy Technologies Program (IETP) is the major component of this strategy.

The IETP represents a $200 million commitment over five years by Alberta Energy to provide royalty adjustments to a number of specific pilot and demonstration projects that use innovative technologies to increase recoveries from existing reserves and encourage responsible, development of oil, natural gas and in-situ oil sands reserves.

  • Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI)

    • Carbon Capture and Storage
A document on the AERI website that contains an invitation for expressions of interest in carbon capture and storage demonstration initiatives in Alberta.

Alberta has significant geological storage capacity and world-class Carbon Capture Storage expertise. A concerted and coordinated effort is needed to develop suites of CCS technologies for evolving our fossil energy systems and infrastructure, from “developing” to “commercially attractive”, within 15 years.

    • Hydrocarbon Upgrading Demonstration Program
This is a report found on the AERI website that summarizes the efforts made by AERI and companies in Alberta’s energy industry to produce next generation clean carbon/coal and hydrocarbon upgrading technologies. Such technologies are hoped to improve Alberta’s energy production while minimizing environmental impact.

    • Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Produced Water Test Facility
A document on the AERI website that summarizes a collaborative research initiative between the Alberta Government and the petroleum industry. The initiative researches water use in the oil sands industry, and proposes demonstration of a steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) produced water treatment facility.

This document also contains an invitation for expressions of interest (EOI) in the proposed facility.
