Product standards and labelling

Most pre-packaged goods sold in Canada must follow certain packaging and labelling requirements.

The Competition Bureau administers and enforces the following acts and regulations that relate to product standards and labelling.

Consumer Packaging & Labelling Act
This act relates to packaging, labelling, sale, importation and advertising of prepackaged and certain other products.

Precious Metals Marking Act
This act relates to marking of articles containing precious metals.

Textile Labelling Act
This act relates to labelling, sale, importation and advertising of consumer textile articles.

Alberta Public Health Act
Alberta Health Services administers the Public Health Act which regulates Alberta’s public health policy practices, including food regulation.

Federal regulations
Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Measurement Canada also administer acts related to consumer packaging and labelling.
