Reasons to Invest

Alberta has been blessed with an abundance of resources, all of which play an important role in its thriving economy. From our natural resources to our skilled work force and growing knowledge-based economy, Alberta offers a great environment for business and families.

The Alberta government has built on these strengths by creating an economic plan that fosters development and a positive business climate, and strives to alleviate economic volatility.

The government encourages investment in other ways, many of them supporting diversification of the economy:

  • The lowest tax regime in Canada. Alberta businesses do not pay general sales taxes, capital taxes or payroll taxes. The general corporate tax rate is 10 per cent, and the small business tax rate is three per cent, the third lowest among the provinces.

  • A 10 per cent refundable provincial tax credit for scientific research and experimental development encouraging research and development in Alberta. It is worth up to $400,000 annually per company.

  • Productivity Alberta, a strategy of productivity education, enhancement tools, and policies that supports the competitiveness of business in Alberta.

  • University Technologies International (UTI), part of the University of Calgary, and TEC Edmonton, part of the University of Alberta, both offer technology commercialization services that connect investors with inventors. The government has introduced a new technology commercialization strategy.

  • The Innovation Voucher program providing early stage assistance that prepares businesses to present investment opportunities.

  • Sponsorship of BizPaL, an online permit and licence service, in communities across Alberta. BizPaL makes it easier for entrepreneurs to start up a business by providing a list of the federal, provincial and municipal permits and licences they need.

  • Government programs for businesses in specific sectors, including energy, agriculture, and forestry.
