In 2008, Mexico continued to be Alberta's fourth largest export market, and one of its fastest growing, with exports to Mexico up 51% year-on-year over 2007. Mexico and Alberta share a healthy trading relationship, with $1.94 billion (CAD) in bilateral trade in 2008. Of this amount, Alberta's exports to Mexico were valued at $1.09 billion, and Mexico's exports to Alberta accounted for $850 million, according to "World Trade Atlas".
In fact, Alberta's exports to Mexico have grown over 1200% since 1993, the year before implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Alberta now represents just under 20% of Canada's total exports to Mexico and nearly 50% of Western Canada's exports to Mexico.
The Alberta Mexico Office was founded in 2002 to stimulate economic development, trade, and investment between the Province of Alberta and Mexico.
