Recreation and sports

Wherever you look, Albertans are leading active, healthy lives and building a reputation for athletic excellence at home and around the world.

The Alberta government works with the recreation and sport sector to strengthen our network of athletes, volunteers, associations and facilities. Alberta recreation is truly a way of life.

In the summer, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and camping in the fresh air of our many provincial parks or in your own community’s green space. Or perhaps you’d prefer to get out on the water for some fishing or boating, or head to the woods for hunting. Those are just a few of many outdoor adventures.

In winter, you can try skiing or snowboarding on one of Alberta’s mountain resorts or community ski hills. If you’d rather stay on flat ground, skating, cross country skiing and snow shoeing are also popular winter activities.

Albertans also participate in a variety of sports year-round. Organized sports are available for all ages and levels of ability.

In the summer, soccer and baseball are popular team sports, while golf is popular for individuals. In winter, hockey is very popular, though many people enjoy curling and gymnasium-based sports like basketball and volleyball.

Alberta also has a number of professional sports teams to enjoy, including the Edmonton Oilers  and Calgary Flames hockey teams and the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders football teams.
