English is the official language of Alberta. You need English to handle everyday situations such as shopping, banking, and talking to your doctor or to your child’s teacher. Being fluent in English will also help you to get a job, make friends and settle into your new life in Alberta.

If you want to become a permanent resident

If you want to become a permanent resident under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), you need to be able to read, write and speak English well.

For some categories under the AINP, you must submit official test results showing that you meet minimum language standards. Your test results cannot be more than two years old at the time of application.

If you do not have test results or your test results are more than two years old and you intend to apply to the AINP, you should arrange to take a language test as soon as possible. You must provide test results from one of the following:
